Working with Trauma

Awareness of the psychological effects of traumatic experience is on the increase. The issue of trauma is now something that almost all therapeutic practitioners will encounter in the course of their work. Working with people with histories of past trauma, however, frequently poses a number of difficulties for the therapist, including the frustration and uncertainty of working with clients who, through fear or extreme anxiety, are reluctant to address their traumatic memories. Furthermore, with the emergence of the false memory debate, therapists may have to deal with their own and their clients' ambivalence regarding the veracity of accounts of childhood sexual abuse. Working with traumatic material, therefore, places a huge burden on the therapist, who must learn to cope with his or her own feelings about the emotional material and the intense feelings of helplessness, rage, rescue or sadness which may be evoked in therapists by traumatised clients. This collection of work uses case examples and empirical research to illuminate these process issues.

Early studies and anecdotal reports suggest equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) may be suitable for treating various forms of trauma. It was unclear, however, whether this modality was effective in addressing specific trauma adaptations associated with Vicarious Trauma. In response, this study employed the use of the CSDT as a theoretical lens from which to explore what the practice of EAP might provide mental health practitioners as a potential method to prevent or treat VT. A critical analysis and review of the literature revealed several significant themes as findings: the impact of VT adaptations specific to safety, self-efficacy and self-regulation in mental health practitioners, flexibility of EAP to address trauma in multiple systems and contexts, EAP as biologically-respectful and benevolent interventional approach, and opportunities for self-development congruent with CSDT. Conclusions indicate the practice of EAP might provide mental health practitioners an effective method to address VT adaptations to safety, self-efficacy and self-regulation within a flexible, trauma-informed, and theoretically grounded format.

Dissociation, Fantasy, & Suggestibility in Thos...

Psychologists have long assumed a connection between traumatic experience and a specific set of psychological symptoms often referred to as dissociation. This hypothesis is referred to as the Trauma model of Dissociation. In the last decade, a series of papers have been published that question the more traditional causal link between trauma and dissociation. In this research, the relationship among dissociation, suggestibility, and fantasy proneness were examined. Fantasy proneness and dissociation were correlated, but suggestibility and dissociation were not. Trauma history was associated with both fantasy proneness and dissociation. Dissociation correlated with trauma history controlling for fantasy proneness. The results support the trauma model of dissociation and fail to support the fantasy model of dissociation.

Natural disasters are an inevitable part of human life and exposure to natural disasters has a devastating impact on the psychological and social well being of children. Not everyone, however, is equally affected by the stress of experiencing such an event. This book seeks to understand who is more susceptible and more resilient to trauma, and what various risk and protective factors promote or buffer the development of post-traumatic stress reactions among children affected by natural disasters. Additionally it seeks to explore the nature of post-traumatic stress persistent among children affected by the tsunami 2004, and the important role of coping in mitigating prolonged negative psychological consequences. This book presents practical implications vital for planning effective and meaningful intervention programmes for children, providing them with assistance and services based on an accurate assessment of need and the level of need. This work also offers recommendations for families, teachers, and professionals working with children affected by natural disasters.

Understanding Psychotherapy for Trauma with Bub...

This work examines Buber's philosphy, specifically as it pertains to psychology and psychotherapy. The importance and relevance of Buber's theory and constructs in the psychotherapeutic process and relationship are highlighted. Psychological theories and therapists closely aligned to or influenced by Buber are also explored. Particular attention is given to Intersubjectivity Theory, which has striking congruence and similarity with Buber's philosophy. Thereafter, the focus shifts to the area of Trauma. Different models of understanding and conceptualising Trauma are presented. It is demonstrated how applying a Buberian understanding of the experience of Trauma can shed light on the impact of Trauma on a sufferer's life. The aim of the study is to understand the impact of Trauma on interpersonal relationships and one's capacity for engaging in an I-Thou mode, and to determine components of psychotherapy found to be most helpful in the recovery process. A qualitative research design is employed and five participants who have experienced a Trauma of some kind are interviewed and their experiences analysed with thematic analysis. Ethical considerations and limitations are included.
